Keeping up a balance and compatibility between economic growth and environment preservation presents a great challenge to developing countries. Yoshiyasu Nao, President and Vice Chairman of Japan Automobile Manufacturer Association (JAMA) pointed out the above issue in front of the participants of the 3rd Indonesia International Automotive Conference (IIAC) today (12/7) at Grand Melia Hotel, Jakarta.
Carrying 'Save the Future, Go Green' as theme theme, the 3rd Indonesia International Automotive Conference (The 3rd IIAC) organized by Gaikindo is an integral part of the 16th Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2008.
Economic growth in a developing countries such as Indonesia is typically accompanied by expanded motorization and the increased of vehicle on the road, which causes increased energy consumption and, as a result, increases CO2 emissions that contributes to global warming. In other words, economic growth - that gives positive signs of development also presents significant potential environment problems. Yoshiyasu, therefore, pointed out that basic issues to be addressed in road transport sector should provides solution to answer 3 major challenges: improving air quality (through a significant reduction of tailpipe-emitted pollutants), countering global warming (through a significant reduction of CO2 emissions), and conserving energy (through new energy policies for the oil-dependent transport sector such as the development and supply of alternative fuels).
In line with Yoshiyasu Nao, Edi Putra Irawadi, the Deputy Minister for Industry and Trade Affairs who representing Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, highlighted government policies, including Presidential Instruction no 5 / 2008 on the Focus of Economic Program for the year 2008-2009 which covers 7 issues, one of which on improvement of investment climate and energy sustainability.
As the Country Coordinator for the automotive sector in ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), Indonesia is challenged to generate provision of policy and development strategies to create domestic automotive industry with regional competitiveness. Government appreciates Gaikindo for its effort in synergizing domestic automotive industry.
Bambang Trisulo, Chairman of GAIKINDO in his welcome and opening remark hopes the conference will propose valuable insights on economic, industry and investment sector which, in time, can generate future policies and guidelines to adress the current global issues, especially environment protection and energy crisis.
Speaking in this conference were also Budi Darmadi, Director General for Transportation Equipment and ICT Industries, Martin Djamin, Expert Staff of Minister of Research and Technology on Alternative and Renewal Energy , and Ahmad Kurniadi represents M Luthfi, Chairman of Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board (BPKM).
